The right box starts with the right board. Go too light and you get crushed boxes, transport damage and returns. Go too heavy and you pay for strength you don’t need, on every box and every pallet. In this guide we compare single flute, double flute and solid board, and give you five questions to find the best fit for your product.
How is corrugated board built?
Corrugated board consists of flat sheets (the liners) with a fluted sheet in between (the flute). The flute works like a series of small arches: it absorbs pressure and impact and makes the board rigid while keeping it light. The taller the flute and the more layers, the stronger the board.
Flutes are identified by a letter. The most common are:
- E-flute: fine, around 1.5 mm. Smooth surface, excellent for printing. Ideal for e-commerce boxes, gift packaging and displays.
- B-flute: around 3 mm. A good balance between strength and print quality.
- C-flute: around 4 mm. More cushioning and stacking strength, widely used for shipping and transport boxes.
Single flute: the all-rounder
Single flute board has one flute between two liners. It is light, cost-efficient and easy to process, and for products up to roughly 15 kg it is usually the right choice.
Typical uses: e-commerce shipments, letterbox boxes, American boxes for B2B deliveries, retail packaging and displays.
Watch out: heavy contents, high warehouse stacks or long routes with many transfers ask for more than single flute can offer.
Double flute: extra strength
Double flute board has two flutes and three liners. Common combinations are EB (around 4.5 mm) and BC (around 7 mm). The result is much higher stacking strength and better protection against impact and puncture.
Typical uses: heavy or fragile products, industrial shipments, export packaging, pallet boxes, octabins for bulk goods and cardboard produce boxes stacked high in cold storage.
Watch out: double flute is thicker, so your box gets slightly bigger on the outside. That matters for letterbox formats and pallet patterns.
Solid board: rigid, compact and moisture-resistant
Solid board has no flute: it is a full, pressed sheet of board. It cushions less than corrugated, but it is very rigid, compact and handles moisture well, especially with a coating.
Typical uses: fresh produce trays, packaging for wet or chilled products, and applications where a thin flute and a clean finish matter.
Quick comparison
| Single flute | Double flute | Solid board | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thickness (indicative) | 1.5 – 4 mm | 4.5 – 7 mm | 1 – 2 mm |
| Stacking strength | Good | Very good | Good |
| Cushioning | Good | Very good | Limited |
| Moisture resistance | With coating | With coating | Very good |
| Printability | Very good (E/B) | Good | Very good |
| Cost per box | Lowest | Higher | Depends on use |
5 questions that decide your choice
- How heavy is the content? Up to around 15 kg, single flute is usually enough. Above that, or with concentrated weight, double flute is safer.
- How high will you stack? Boxes at the bottom of a pallet carry everything above them, sometimes for weeks. That is where double flute makes the difference.
- What route does the box travel? Every transfer, sorting centre and truck adds risk. Long or international routes need extra protection.
- Will the box meet moisture or cold? Cold rooms, condensation and wet products weaken board. Choose solid board or corrugated with a moisture-resistant coating.
- How important is the look? Want full-colour print or a premium unboxing? A fine flute (E or B) or white board gives the sharpest result.
Tip: don’t over-specify
When in doubt, many companies pick double flute “just to be safe”. It feels safe, but it costs money: more material per box, more volume per pallet and higher transport costs. A well-chosen single flute, possibly with a stronger liner, is often just as strong for your application and clearly cheaper. Match the board to your product, not the other way around.
