sustainability at J&S

For most applications: yes. Cardboard is renewable and has a recycling rate of over 85% in Belgium. Plastic scores much lower in that regard. Furthermore, recent research from the ‘University of Bologna’ shows that cardboard packaging can extend the shelf life of products by several days due to lower microbial contamination, which reduces food waste. It is important, however, that the comparison is fair: a thin plastic film weighs less than a cardboard box, so this context naturally matters as well.

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international quality mark that guarantees the wood used to make the cardboard comes from responsibly managed forests. For your company, an FSC logo on the packaging provides visible proof of responsible sourcing. Retailers are increasingly requesting it.

Climate Camp is an initiative that guides companies in measuring and step-by-step reducing their energy consumption, water usage, and CO2 emissions. J&S Packaging is a member, which means we have concrete data on our own impact and can share it upon request with customers who wish to calculate their scope 3 emissions.
Upon request, we can provide an estimate of the CO2 impact per box or package, based on our Climate Camp data and the chosen material. This is useful for companies that need to report under CSRD or wish to reduce their scope 3 emissions.
Yes. We actively monitor the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and advise our customers on material choices, recyclability, and plastic reduction in line with the new rules. In a consultation, we can look together at the impact PPWR has on your packaging portfolio.
That varies greatly. Some sustainable alternatives (such as banderole trays) are cheaper because you need fewer cutting dies. Others (such as top seal) require an initial investment but drastically reduce your plastic consumption. We calculate it per project and always look for the most cost-efficient route.
All our cardboard is recyclable. FSC-certified cardboard is available for almost every product in our range. For specific sustainable applications (top seal, Easy Close, banderole), we have specialized solutions. In a conversation, we can determine together which sustainability improvement makes the most sense for your specific packaging.
