Three seconds. That is all the time you have at the shelf before a shopper walks past your product. In those three seconds, a display must grab attention, tell the story briefly, and invite the customer to reach out. The material you choose for this determines whether you succeed and what the cost per promotion will be.
In recent years, cardboard displays have been gaining ground over plastic, wood, and metal. Not out of nostalgia, but because they are more advantageous in five concrete areas for brands that regularly run promotions in supermarkets, drugstores, and specialized retail.
Reason 1: Recyclable without the hassle, even in the store itself
Retailers are caught between sustainability reporting and operational reality. Plastic displays must be disposed of separately, metal displays require disassembly, and both count towards the supermarket’s waste figures.
Cardboard simply goes into the existing paper/cardboard stream. Disassemble, flatten, into the press. Done.
For brands supplying supermarket chains with strict sustainability clauses, this is often the deciding argument.
Reason 2: More cost-effective for small and medium-sized print runs
Plastic and metal only pay off for large print runs because the molds and tools represent a fixed investment. Cardboard does not have that threshold; although die-cutting costs apply here too, these are still often more economical. That is why cardboard has gradually become the norm for seasonal campaigns, launch promotions, and brands serving multiple smaller retailers simultaneously.
Visual proposal: Simple graph with volume on the X-axis and cost per unit on the Y-axis. Three lines: cardboard, plastic, metal. Immediately shows where cardboard wins the intersection.
Reason 3: Faster from briefing to store
With plastic and metal, you quickly face lead times of 8-12 weeks because molds must be designed, milled, and tested. Cardboard can achieve this in a fraction of that time. For campaigns that need to be on the shelf quickly after a product launch, cardboard is often the only option that meets the deadline.
How does this process work at J&S Packaging?
- Concept and die-cut template — ready for proofing within 1-2 weeks
- Production — 2-4 weeks for custom displays in standard volumes
- Delivery — from one of our four locations (Ghislenghien, Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Sint-Truiden, or Urmond), with our own transport just-in-time on the rollout date
Reason 4: Fully printable and moldable
No compromise on visuals.
Anything that can be done on a box can be done on cardboard: full-color offset, flexo for large runs, digital printing for small series, and all finishes — varnish, lacquer, foil stamping, or spot UV for logos and text.
Freedom of form is the second half of the story.
With die-cutting, a display can take any shape: a cut-out silhouette, a 3D element, or a shape that mimics the product. With plastic and metal, you are stuck with straight shapes or very expensive molds.
- Full brand visual rollout — all Pantone colors, all finishes
- Freedom of form — 3D elements, cut-outs, product-specific contours
- Easily adaptable — a seasonal variant of the same display is designed in days, not months
Reason 5: Speed and simplicity in distribution and assembly
An important but underestimated advantage: cardboard displays are delivered flat and assembled as foldable units in the store. This saves in three areas:
- Lower transport costs — more displays per pallet, resulting in fewer trips
- Less warehouse space — for both the retailer and you
- Fast in-store assembly — usually 1-2 minutes without tools
Plastic and metal arrive as a single piece, with all the associated transport and storage disadvantages. For retail chains conducting store rollouts across hundreds of locations simultaneously, this is a major factor. Furthermore, if they do not arrive in one piece, there is a higher chance that your displays will not be assembled correctly, which can create a messy impression and is detrimental to the brand experience.
The four types of cardboard displays
Which display suits your goal?
| Type | Best for | Location in store |
| Floor display | Promotions, product launches, seasonal campaigns | On the shop floor, islands, aisles |
| Counter display | Impulse purchases, small products | At the checkout or on the counter |
| Stacking tray | Volume offers, FMCG | On the shelf, as shelf-ready packaging |
| Accessories (standees, wobblers, shelf talkers) | Reinforcement of existing shelf position | On the shelf, on the box, next to the product |
The mistake often made: only looking at the image on the front of the display, not at the construction. A display that is not sturdy enough will tilt after three days. A display that is too complex to assemble will remain in the store’s warehouse. Always start with the combination of image + construction + ease of assembly.
